Description

“Wait, I wouldn’t--!”

The air racing past his ears, the Rufflet tucked in his wings and dove at the target. It was the only thing he could see. Everything else blurred around him; it didn’t matter, man. This was it. The stuffed bag was his enemy and he was totally gonna take it down. His body prepared for Aerial Ace seconds before he made impact. And damn was it an impact. Perhaps more than he anticipated. He slammed beak-first into the leather bag, the force expelling the little air he had left in his lungs. The bag bent back from the force, but he didn’t create enough to break it, so, as Newton’s Law goes, the bag sprang back and the Rufflet went flying back. With a huff he hit the floor and groaned.

The Mienfoo came up to him and helped him up. “After all this working out, I don’t think you were strong enough for that,” he scolded. “Try to be more careful next time. I don’t want anyone to get hurt in the Dojo.”

The Rufflet rolled his shoulders and sighed. “Yeah, yeah,” he agreed. He looked at the target he had tried to tackle and frowned. “I just... I... I want to be stronger...”

“For your age and species, you are quite acceptable,” Master Foo told him.

“No... Not like that.” The Rufflet looked at the floor and sat down. “I want to be... stronger.”

“I--I’m afraid I don’t see the difference...?”

“I want to be brave!” the Rufflet blurted. “I want to not be afraid! I--I want to be able to be myself!” He winced as if speaking of this caused him pain. “I... I want to evolve, o-or something. Will that help?”

Master Foo observed him silently for a minute, a paw to his chin. “I suppose that explains why you’ve been coming here more often, then... In all honesty, Mr. Vince, you are physically capable of evolution. Though it appears, mentally, that is another matter...” He came up to Vince and sat beside him. “I, well, I am no psychiatrist, but I believe something is definitely holding you back.”

Vince averted his gaze. “But... that’s not fair. If I’m ready shouldn’t I...?”

“Evolution requires different expectations met for each individual. You spoke of wanting to be brave. You showed clear courage in tackling that punching bag, despite your dwindling stamina...”

“Because it was just a bag,” Vince sighed. “If... If it were a Pokemon I just... I can’t. I’m a Rufflet. My species are supposed to be the bravest of all Pokemon, yet... here I am, afraid of my own damn sh-shadow!”

Foo thought for a moment. “I see. Yet I’ve heard tales of your team taking on ferocious Weaville, Lugia, and Terrakion.”

“That wasn’t me. That was Nikki and other teams. I was just there to run away. I was no help...”

To the Rufflet’s surprise, he heard Foo chuckle. Confused, he faced the Dojo Master to see what was so funny. He didn’t see anything. He asked why he was laughing.

“It’s just odd,” Master Foo explained, “for I have heard of you, Vince, being the most prideful, boastful Rufflet to walk Tao’s streets. Yet here you are, saying the exact opposite.”

Vince’s feathers stood on end and he turned his head angrily. Immediately Master Foo ceased laughing. “My apologies. But may I assume, then, that when you go parading around town exclaiming your achievements, that it is truly just an act?”

Vince, still looking away, replied: “Y-yeah. But I mean, what else am I supposed to do?! I-I can’t show who I really am. I’m a wimp. If people saw me as that...”

“If you believe yourself to be a wimp, then you are! But instead of correcting it you just created a mask to wear. But it’s clear that mask is crumbling.”

Vince nodded. “N-Nikki and Tommy I think know. Well, they kinda always knew, but they know more, y’know?”

“I see what you need,” Master Foo said, and Vince faced him. “You have a lack of confidence, Vince. True confidence, in who you really are, not that false ego that’s been strutting around. You won’t be able to be brave or evolve until you achieve this.”

“But... but how?”

“Unfortunately I can’t answer that. That’s something you have to discover.” Master Foo stood up and walked over to some toppled equipment. As he began setting them up he spoke again, “Training is over for today. You are welcome to come back, but I’m not sure what good it’ll do you.”

Vince, frustrated, harshly asked why.

Master Foo sighed. “You know why. Now go home and rest.”

Vince got to his feet and approached the Dojo Master. “N-No! You have to tell me why--”

“Vince?” a voice from the entrance. “Damn Vince, I heard you shouting. What are you doing in here?”

A Deino with his fringe pulled up by a red headband stood at the doorway. Nikki. Damn. Vince didn’t want him to know he was going here.

“I... I was just checking if there were some girls in here. Nothing hotter than girls working out, right dude?” He laughed half-heartedly and went with his teammate, the two talking as they left.

Master Foo continued to set up equipment, shaking his head. “I wonder if he learned anything at all...” he whispered sadly.

Wow, Vince is so proud and boastful on one hand, but on the other hand, he's quite timid.

Clearly, that mask he's making is starting to crumble away. Slowly but surely. I'd also love to see what he'd look like as a Braviary! :D

Also, nice screencap. It looks almost real!
